Thomas Baines (1820-1875) was a British artist, naturalist, and explorer of Southern Africa and Australia. He was born in Norfolk, England, in 1820. His art career started with an apprenticeship to a coach painter focused on ornamental painting and coats of arms. At 22, Baines left England for South Africa and settled in Cape Town, where he became a portraitist and landscape painter.
He joined many explorers of the day, and most of his artwork, which is famous today, came from his trip along the Zambezi River to Victoria Falls. Museums in England, Australia and Zimbabwe hold some of his original works. These prints are by lithographers & publishers Day & Son, limited, London, in 1865.
